Web Site Builder Tools

June 8th, 2008

One of the most asked questions for newbies to web site internet marketing is which website builder tools I would recommend for building web sites. There are many tools for website building both free and commercial ones that all have their strengths and weaknesses. I started off using some of the free ones but quickly found their limitations to be a hindrance. This is what happens as you become more proficient with tools. Over the past few years I have been using XSitePro version1.x which is a brilliant tool.
Here is why:

  1. Keeps all your web site projects in one place.
  2. I only need to learn and become proficient with one tool for all my sites.
  3. It logically lays out the design and separates this out from the content given you the best flexibility to make changes.
  4. I love the simple SEO tool that comes with it. I can SEO my content in minutes without having to think too hard about it because it tells you what to do!
  5. It comes with ready made templates and others you can buy.
  6. The help and user manuals are the best I have seen for this type of product period.
  7. The support is responsive if you have a problem.
  8. It comes with built-in publishing features as well making it easy to publish updates and ftp them to your hosting server.

The only things I found annoying in the version1.x were:

  1. Using it in design mode introduced a lot of extraneous HTML code into the source so you needed to be careful.
  2. If you wanted to add your own CSS stylesheets then you needed to be a bit technical to get it to work.

I recently upgraded to version2.x and it has got a load more features that I am working through. One of the best features is the scheduler that allows you to put your web site building process onto auto-pilot.

I would highly recommend strengths and weaknesses. I started off using some of the free ones but quickly found their limitations to be a hindrance. This is what happens as you become more proficient with tools for website building. Over the past few years I have been using XSitePro but it does have a steep learning curve so it is not for the faint hearted. It took me a few days to get everything I wanted out of it up and running. But there are plenty of XSitePro books, tutorials, help files, and support forums.

Are Directory Submission Tools Worth It?

June 6th, 2008

The short answer is yes, absolutely worth it!

Here are the advantages:

  1. They provide a list of directories that take submissions
  2. They save you time by automating the data entry required for each directory
  3. They keep track of which directories you have submitted to
  4. They give you an indication of the page rank strength of the directory
  5. They update the list of directories with new directories regularly

Here are the disadvantages:

  1. Some tools are just used by spammers to harvest your details
  2. Some tools only provide semi-automatic data entry and you still need to manually enter some details
  3. Some tools only allow you to store your data online

Overall directory submission tools are a must if you are looking to build back links and promote your web site.

There is one free directory submission tool that I use called Submit Helper as I find its features are easy to learn quickly. Check out Submit Helper 0.5 (beta) here.
